WE-ARE-FAMILIA is a global network of emerging painters, printmakers, illustrators, T-shirt designers, graphic designers, industrial designers, fashion designers, directors, photographers, sculptors, architects and musicians dedicated to creative studies based on the concept of family. Cofounded and spearheaded by New York Creative Director Jennifer Garcia, WE-ARE-FAMILIA consists of over 50 creators that have come together to explore the powerful, complex ties which consciously and unconsciously touch all that we experience as humans.

WE-ARE-FAMILIA’s primary ongoing project is a series of 25 one-of-a kind keepsake boxes showcasing original “mementos” contributed by its family of artists. Each Keepsake Box is made from recycled and/or surplus materials and contains a broad range of approximately 40 multimedia pieces- from drawings, paintings, collages and prints, to hand-assembled fanzines, cut paper pop-ups, 8-track soundscapes, and designer toys. Keepsake boxes have long served as decorative objects intended to safeguard possessions held precious by their owner. Their nostalgic and traditional characteristics serve as a counterpoint to works contributed by a generation of artists fluent in today’s contemporary forms of expression.

For this exhibition, WE-ARE-FAMILIA will address the spatial tropes of domesticity and familial dynamics by transforming Open Space into a “living room” of seamlessly integrated furniture, art and design. An installation of new works by ten WE-ARE-FAMILIA members will be showcased in addition to Keepsake Box No. 5, entitled “Video Box”, an elegant assembly of found objects and discarded furniture fragments. Keepsake Box No. 5 - “Video Box”, uses a set of mismatched Victorian style table legs to eccentrically support a weathered medicine cabinet, purposely left as is to highlight its history. The dichotomous nature of these Keepsake Boxes is particularly accentuated in Keepsake Box No. 5 - “Video Box”. The original hinging mirrored door is retrofitted with a video touch screen, carefully positioned to showcase films by director Olivier Babinet (Paris) and video artist Rashaad Newsome (Brooklyn, New York).

Opening night guests are invited to enjoy green BBQ in our front yard, refreshments by Beacon’s local micro-brewery, Keegan Ales, vintage 45’s played by DJ Cerock, and street projections after dark.
