Middle of february 2015, I was invited to FIAP[Festival Internacional de Arte Público] in Cancun, Mexico.

Concept:
This installation art is expressing my wish to Cancun.
I want Cancun to find the way to create new value, not only by tourism.
To make this tendency of developing culture and art, I decided to make paper airplanes.
These more than 100 paper airplanes are having all different colors and patters. And it's making a big circle in the same direction in the air at the hall of Culture Institute of Cancun.
I hope Cancun will be more amazing place than ever through FIAP. This is my installation work at FIAP. Enjoy!

The background of this festival, FIAP | Festival Internacional de Arte Público, there is a sort of dilemma for cancun people.
Since Cancun developed as resort area 45 years ago, the main economy was grown by tourism, as you can see lots of buildings in there.
In spite of the development, there were not much of culture and art background growing in the city for so long.
Now local people is really fascinated by the mission of building up fresh and creative culture in cancun. They strongly believe it's gonna be new value of Cancun.Concept:

先月のメキシコでのアートフェスティバルの作品についてより詳しく日本語にまとめました。
FIAP／インターナショナルパブリックアートフェスティバルのインスタレーション作品について
FIAPからはまずカンクンについてこのように教えられました。
45年前に政府がリゾート開発に着手するまで、カンクン一帯はジャングルに覆われた場所で人もほとんど住んではいませんでした。
それから多くの外国人が訪れる世界有数のリゾート地となりましたが、アートなどの文化面はなかなか発展して来ませんでした。
その中で地元の行政とNGOがタッグを組みFIAPを立ち上げ、カンクンにリゾートだけでなくアートでも盛り上げようと奮起しています。
そんなカンクンに力を貸して欲しい。アートを通して地元を活気づけたいと、日本から僕が招待されました。

事前に日本からSkypeでミーティングを重ねるなか、この紙飛行機を使ったインスタレーションにたどり着きました。
コンセプトとしてはこの紙飛行機は全て異なる色とパターンが着色されており、どれ一つと同じ絵柄はありません。これはカンクンに集まる多くの異なる人種、バックグラウンドを持つ人々を表現しています。
その紙飛行機達は同じ方向を向き会場内に大きな円を描き、ひとつのハーモニーを描いています。
これは彼らがアートの文化を根付かせるために結束する事で、カンクンは新たな価値を見つけ、より魅力的な場所になっていく。というメッセージを込めています。

展示の仕方や見せ方などはまだまだ改良の余地はありましたが、このコンセプトに多くの人が納得してくれて本当に喜んでくれました。
壁画だけでなくこういった表現でも見てくれた人を感動させる事ができることを証明できたのではないかなと思っています。
アートを通して、またこの折り紙を使った事で日本とメキシコの距離も縮まればこんなに嬉しい事はありません。
